Tim Hawkins Corned Beef and Cabbage

Like most holidays during the pandemic, St. Patrick's Day celebrations have changed to fit the new normal.

Last year, the holiday coincided with the first wave of the pandemic.

With indoor dining permitted and increased seating capacity, Bucks and Montgomery county bar owners are excited to welcome guests to spend the holiday with Irish foods, music and , of course, drink.

Here's how area bars are celebrating in year two of the pandemic.

The Dubliner on the Delaware, New Hope

For the New Hope pub, St. Patrick's Day is the busiest time of the year. The staff plans weeks in advance to accommodate the large numbers.

Last year, The Dubliner temporarily closed its doors right before the holiday, so all plans were canceled.

The pub is back this year with the usual spread. The holiday menu includes Irish staples like corned beef, cabbage, fish and chips, shepherd's pie and lamb stew. Guinness and house-made cocktails with Jameson and other Irish whiskeys are served, including traditional Irish coffee.

Though there will be limited capacity, Chef Daniel Gras said they "hope to have a busy St. Patrick's Day."

There also will be special giveaways like a Guinness blanket and glass.

A bagpiper also will perform.

"I feel like observing holiday traditions are important as long as they're done safely," Gras said. "It will definitely not be like other years in regard to the people we will accommodate."

If there's nice weather on St. Patrick's Day, Farmhouse Tavern will set up some tables in their parking lot.

Farmhouse Tavern, Doylestown

Folks at the Farmhouse get a running start, with specials and Irish dancers the Sunday before the holiday each year.

On St. Patrick's Day, the tavern stays open all day with Irish specials and music in the afternoon. "It's just like a real fun festival atmosphere," said owner Tim O'Leary.

This year is no different, except for limited capacity.

Starting from 11 a.m., Wednesday, guests can enjoy Irish grub like corned beef and cabbage, shepherd's pie, bangers and mash, fish and chips, smoked salmon salad and an Irish cheddar potato chowder, while listening to music from 4 to 8 p.m.

O'Leary said they'll maintain the limited seating and if the weather's nice, they'll put out some tables in the parking lot.

"I'm actually surprised it's happening at all," O'Leary said. "I was going into the mindset that it wasn't gonna happen so now it's gonna happen ... I feel that things will get back to some kind of normalcy."

McCoole's at the Red Lion Inn is serving up green drinks for the holiday.

Irish music, dancers, menu, beers and bagpipers are how the Quakertown tavern usually celebrates the holiday – and this year is no different.

For owner Jan Hench, the pandemic is now over so this year St. Patrick's Day will be celebrated as usual. Guests can enjoy indoor seating with 50% permitted with additional tables wadded for outdoor seating.

Dancers will stay inside for their performance, while the bagpiper will move in and out, providing traditional entertainment for guests.

The menu includes items like cream of potato soup, Irish nachos, Reuben sandwiches, traditional corned beef and cabbage, beer-battered fish and chips and shepherd's pie.

McStew's Irish Pub, Levittown

All-day Wednesday, guests can stop in, raise a glass of Guinness and enjoy some Irish cuisine at the Levittown pub.

The pub's Red Room Stage will showcase performances by Clancy's Pistol at 3 p.m., the Irish Dancing from Fitzpatrick School of Dance at 6 p.m., and the return of Fish out of Water at 7 p.m.

Specials include corned beef or ham and cabbage, "Irish Cannonballs" (corned beef brisket, sauerkraut, Swiss and cream cheese fried roll-ups); Irish burger, McStew's burger, Guinness stew, shepherd's pie, Irish meatloaf and fish and chips.

There will be limited capacity. Valid IDs and masks are required.

In previous years, the pub has stayed open from 9 to 2 a.m. with live entertainment and a packed house. So this year, owner Tom Tyler is going to bring back a "semblance of normalcy" but within the state guidelines.

"I'm looking forward to having people back in the bar — having a quantity of people — which we haven't had, quite frankly," Tyler said. "As limited as that may be, and won't fulfill my expectations from a financial perspective, I do look forward to hosting people who are looking to have a good time on St. Patty's Day."
